Since 1 July 2024, the LDLGO, specifically the Wastewater Treatment Plants Division (WTPD) of the Infrastructure Sector, has assumed responsibility for the operation and maintenance of all wastewater treatment plants in the Limassol district, aiming to produce high-quality recycled water.
In the early days of the Organisation’s operation, Dr Grigoris Panayiotou, Head of the Infrastructure Sector, and Ms Pierina Marti, Head of WTPD, visited the Alassa Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Pumping Station to assess the plant's condition and take measures to address existing challenges for improved functionality.
During the visit, technical malfunctions affecting the efficient treatment of wastewater were identified. Various interventions and maintenance works were carried out to upgrade the equipment, enhance performance, and ensure safety within the facility.
Special emphasis was placed on ensuring the quality of recycled water, promoting its sustainable use for agricultural and irrigation applications, as well as ensuring the safety of the facility and surrounding areas. Currently, treated water is being produced at the Alassa WWTP, and LDLGO is investigating the possibility of directing this water to the community reservoir for irrigation purposes.
So far, the LDLGO has invested over €15,000 in renovation and repair works at the Alassa WWTP and Pumping Station.
Regarding the remaining treatment stages, the WTPD aims to propose corrective actions and maintenance work that have not been carried out in recent years, ensuring the plant operates at full capacity across all treatment stages.
The continuous improvement of recycled water quality remains a key priority for the LDLGO, contributing to environmental protection and serving the needs of Limassol’s residents.
