The Limassol District Local Government Organisation (E.O.A.) records a significant European achievement, securing technical assistance from the European Commission (DG REGIO) under the Cohesion for Transitions (C4T) initiative. The support focuses on empowering the mountainous communities of Limassol District and promoting sustainable investments in water resource management.
Through the C4T GROUNDWORK program, targeted and personalized technical support will be provided, tailored to the real needs of the communities and in close cooperation with the European Commission’s dedicated team. The primary goal is to mature sustainable water management projects and enhance the capacity of mountainous communities to absorb European funding instruments, particularly in the fields of water supply and wastewater management.
Strategic importance for Cyprus and the Limassol District
The technical assistance is expected to significantly accelerate the preparation and implementation of necessary investments in water supply and wastewater infrastructure, particularly in communities facing substantial shortages and aging networks, such as those served by the Arkolachania Common Scheme. At the same time, the strategic, technical, and organizational capacity of both the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (E.O.A.) and the small mountainous communities will be strengthened.
Special emphasis will be placed on the collection and analysis of data in areas with limited storage capacity, high water losses, and, in some cases, inadequate consumption measurement systems. Within this framework, solutions resilient to climate change and water scarcity—a major challenge for the Cypriot economy—will be designed, taking into account fire protection considerations as well.
Simultaneously, coordination and data exchange will be improved, facilitating the smooth and timely integration of mountainous communities into the Limassol E.O.A. The creation of a prioritized project inventory will enable the systematic pursuit of European funding, contributing to more effective project implementation and a substantial reduction in water losses.
A new development chapter for the E.O.A Lemesos
Participation in the C4T GROUNDWORK program marks a new phase of institutional and operational strengthening for the Limassol District Local Government Organisation (E.O.A.), solidifying its role as a key authority in the integrated planning and implementation of water supply and wastewater infrastructure projects at the district level.
At the same time, significant opportunities are being created for the systematic mapping of funding prospects, the development and promotion of both mature and planned projects, the strengthening of networks with European institutions, and the exchange of best practices through thematic workshops and collaborative initiatives.
This achievement substantially enhances the readiness of the E.O.A. Lemesos and the mountainous communities of the district for a coordinated transition to a model of integrated, resilient, and sustainable water resources management, benefiting the local society and the broader developmental trajectory of the region.
